Poor management of the toilet can really make or break your listing.
Hello it’s Bernadette Janson. And today I’m here with a Airbnb tip around managing the toilets in the listing. I know it’s an unusual subject but it’s a very important subject. And poor management of the toilet can really make or break your listing.
Now our first tip:
Make sure the seat’s down and the lid’s down.
Now I’ll got a few male cleaners and this does not come naturally to them so it’s something that I need to train them to do. And I actually make sure that I check after they’ve cleaned for the first couple of months to ensure that this and other finer points of the cleaning process have been followed. There’s nothing more off-putting than walking into a toilet, and certainly as a woman and finding the the lid up and possibly the seat up you sort of think “Ummm did someone just use this?”
So when the guests arrive you want to make sure that the toilet lid is down.
Second tip is:
Make sure there’s plenty of toilet paper.
That may seem obvious but when you’ve got so much to think about often it gets skipped and you actually need to communicate this to your cleaners. So tell them how many rolls you want to leave per day so that they’re really clear about how they should be leaving that toilet stock.
And the third tip is:
Drop a couple of drops of essential oil on top of the water in the toilet before you put the lid down.
Now the reason we do that is because, well to make it smell lovely but more importantly that the olfactory or the sense of smell is the strongest sense that you can appeal to. It is the most powerful way to communicate a message to the person that you’re trying to communicate to. So by dropping a couple of drops of essential oil onto the water, putting the lid down. When the guests come to use the toilet for the first time they get this aroma that’s really clean and fresh and hopefully citrus and it sends them the message that this toilet is immaculately clean and that’s what we want.
Okay so just to recap:
- Make sure the lid’s down.
- Make sure you’ve got plenty of toilet paper stocked, and
- Drop a couple of drops of essential oil on top of the water before you put the lid down to make sure that you are sending a very powerful message to your guests.
Now we normally get our toilet paper from “Who Gives a Crap” on auto-ship so we can get or we do get three-ply bamboo toilet paper individually wrapped. It’s very easy to manage. You know now when you buy the bags of 12 or 24, you take one out and the rest will get all rummaged up? Well these are all individually wrapped in recycled paper so it’s kind to the environment. And it turns up automatically every quarter so there’s no running around panicking because we’ve run out of toilet paper. We always have a ready supply and I’d really suggest you try that. They are a great organization, they are a social enterprise and they do a lot of good around the world with the profits that they make from their business. Okay so I hope you enjoyed that.
See you next time!
